Sue's Mantra

Illawong Landscape Design: Our Story
Illawong is an Aboriginal word meaning between two waters, referring to the Georges and Woronora Rivers. Illawong was originally inhabited by the Tharawal and Eora tribes who left remnants of their lives in many middens, rock carvings and cave paintings.
Illawong landscape designs is a business inspired by this tribal interpretation of land between two waters, land of significance and land where memories are made.
Through design, we endeavour to echo this theme. Joining both the client and designer ideas to create an authentic and considered design; ensures we produce the highest quality work possible.
Meet our Head Designer: Sue Vernes
Sue has 30+ years experience working within the Horticultural Industry both in Australia and Overseas.

Beginning her horticultural journey in her twenties, Sue began working in wholesale nurseries where vast quantities of exotic plants were propagated and grown for sale Australia wide. Her travels overseas predominately in hot humid tropical locations introduced and challenged her on how to master fast growing environments.

After living away from Australia for nearly 12 years Sue returned home with a newly developed love for the Native Australian landscape and subsequently, the plant world.

These past 10 years has seen Sue studying Landscape Design, developing the Kitchen Garden Program at 3 Melbourne schools, design and building of 4 natural play spaces for primary school children and design and building of various suburban and country gardens. She has had the privilege of being inspired by many diverse landscapes around the world, none more inspiring to her than our own unique Australian landscape.
