This natural playspace and kitchen garden in St.Kilda, embodies the true meaning of biodiversity. This garden encourages student learning; by encouraging children to play, fossick and grow their imagination amoungst the streams, wells, dry habitats and growing crops.

This brief challenged us to use a very restriciting space to create a unique playspace/garden suitable for 3 and 4 year old children. Up for the challenge, we decided to create a flexible design which encompassed several unique play areas, encouraging kids to nestle in the outdoors.
"The end result has been wonderful to watch and experience. Children are now engaged playing in small groups, in fact there is so much on offer they don’t all reach for the same toy or experience at the same time. They love hiding or clamoring through the arched tea tree maze, they are growing vegetables and picking mulberries. The cubby house is enjoyed as a hideout, a shop, a sleepout or a quiet reading space. This garden is both versatile and robust but most of all it’s a loved outdoor classroom by children and teachers."

In order to conceal the back of an ugly school portable a succulent vertical wall has been planted by the children. Flowers are picked for the kitchen and little baby succulents are picked and re-planted into empty pots on the wall.
